Troop: Annual Summer Camp 09

This years most awaited summer camp was held at Zurrieq Scouts headquarters between the 16th and the 23rd of August. A total of 45 troop members split into 5 patrols attended this camp. The troop was led by Skipper Ian Fenech, troop instructor Sara Fenech and Christine Bonnici. As usual the Patrol leaders and their assistants arrived at the campsite a day before the official opening of the camp and made sure that most of the campsite was ready to accommodate the rest of the troop members. On Monday morning the official opening was done by the gsl and the camp kicked off smoothly in the hot summer sun. First day was dedicated to the decoration of the site and each patrol prepared various types of useful gadgets and other stuff to make the best out of the camp area. Before everyone went to sleep the famous night game lighthouse was played.

Day two was characterised by the water sports day which this year was called splish splash fun and the spice was given by the older sections who organised the obstacle course which included the usual ingredients, eggs, flour and orange squash. The day finished by a treasure hunt around the streets of Zurrieq and one can say that although the tasks were not easy most patrols managed to retrieve most of the treasures.

Day three was the busiest of the whole camp because included two heavy activities including the bbq night. In the morning the troop were asked to make an open fire and cook their food. All patrols had to use the same type of food and cooking methods and finally they were judged for their efforts. In the afternoon, during a session called talent exposure the members were asked to create a kite, a drawing or a model. These were also judged and the following were the winners: Althea for drawing, Kimberley and Peter Paul for the kite and Rachel, Ryan, Emma and Rebecca.

Mission Wilson was the name give to the most awaited event of Thursday. This mission was to build a raft out of wooden staves and plastic journey cans. It was an awful hot day but by mid day all three rafts were ashore with the members paddling all over Pretty Bay. While the rafts were being built some other members were competing within each other in a sandcastle competition and it was amazing how these people constructed their structures out of sand.

The fifth day was mostly dedicated to the campfire and one can easily say that the campfire was one of the most memorable ones. All sections participated fully and there was a smooth running order with different stunts and songs. Finally a very well done to all the leaders who helped out to make sure this camp will be a total success. Well done also goes to all the troop members who worked hard and achieved a lot of badges and awards.
